Vaughan Williams: A Lakeland Journey

March 30, 2022

This summer, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’ birth, and the profound impact his stunning music has made on the musical landscape, with a vast array of choral and chamber music, songs, and orchestral masterpieces.

Full details will be announced in late April, but here are some of our top Vaughan Williams picks for this summer.

ON WENLOCK EDGE
Martin Roscoe (piano), Robert Murray (tenor) and the Echea Quartet (Royal Overseas League winners) join forces to present the wonderfully pastoral On Wenlock Edge amongst a veritable Vaughan Williams cornucopia of chamber music and song. (5 August)

FANTASIAS ON THE LARK
Keep your eyes peeled for pop-up performances of the Lark Ascending across the area with violinist Esther Abrami. Meanwhile electric violist Nic Pendlebury will be showing off new adaptations of the Lark by young composers and local children, inspired by the many birds at South Walney Nature Reserve. (4 August)

SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH EWAN MILLAR
Local musicians get an unmissable chance to make music this year in a workshop with brilliant BBC Young Musician Ewan Millar (oboe) and Vaughan Williams’ oboe concerto. (2 August)

ROYAL NORTHERN SINFONIA
After 9 days of wall-to-wall music, family events, walks and more, the climax of the 2022 festival is the visit of the Royal Northern Sinfonia to perform Vaughan Williams epic Sinfonia Antartica. Paired with Toward the unknown region and Cecilia McDowall’s 70 degrees below zero our own Artistic Director Stephen Threlfall takes the helm with the newly formed LDSM festival chorus, tenor Robert Murray, soprano Jessica Harper and narrator Peter Macqueen. (7 August).
