Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, was an amateur flute player, as depicted in the painting of him performing at Sanssouci. CPE Bach, as the harpsichord player in the Royal court, knew how to please his patron. By some accounts, the E minor Sonata by his father was written for the Potsdam flautist in the King’s court orchestra, so the son followed in his father’s footsteps, while also learning from the music of his godfather, Telemann.
