Haydn’s B flat major Quartet is the first of his ‘Prussian’ Quartets, dedicated to Frederick William II just as the two Beethoven cello sonatas heard yesterday and tomorrow. Composed in just 5 days in 1842, Schumann’s year of chamber music, the Quintet is a glittering jewel of a piece. Clara was due to play the piano in the private première, but fell ill, whereupon Mendelssohn stepped in and sight-read it.
