William Alwyn was not only a fine composer but also principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra for a number of years, so the presence of three of his works in LDSM 2019 links to our flute theme. He was also the teacher of Gareth Morris, who gave the première of Alwyn’s Sonata and the UK première of Poulenc’s Sonata 10 years later. More connections, as Saint-Saëns composed his Romance in the midst of the Paris Commune turmoil depicted in Shostakovich’s The New Babylon, shown here on Saturday 3rd, hence Shostakovich’s brief flute Intermezzo to follow; and Chaminade dedicated her Concertino to Taffanel, who also premiered the Saint-Saëns…

Emma, former finalist in BBC Young Musician 2010, returns with her baroque trio tomorrow afternoon.
