Shostakovich: triumph over tyranny

Spend a whole day immersed in the music of Shostakovich and learn more about his life and works.

How could one of the 20th century's greatest composers create so many masterpieces under the shadows of regimes where he was at one moment the darling of the state, at the next ready with his suitcase packed for a journey from which he knew he would not return? Leading critic and broadcaster David Nice places Shostakovich's music in the context of his life and times and the international figures such as Benjamin Britten with whom he formed close bonds.
