Trio Opal is winner of the 2018 Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition in Birmingham and comes to LDSM straight after a return visit to Ferrandou in France. Clara Schumann’s 1846 trio is arguably her greatest work and yet still rarely heard; Robert’s light and carefree miniature dates from 4 years before. One could be forgiven for believing the epithet of Archduke applied to the music and not its dedicatee, so high is its rank in the pantheon of chamber music.
