“… What a joy! Great musicianship, great fun – and a welcome balance to the rest of the programme… Fresh, innovative, exciting, energetic, entertaining and very enjoyable… A great mix of unfamiliar music played with great panache… Please try to have them back – though in a larger venue!…” Audience members 2016

One of the first events to sell out at last summer’s festival was Project Jam Sandwich – so now it is back ‘by popular demand’ under its new name, meaning ‘of the people’ in a hybrid of Sotho and Zulu from South Africa – the birthplace of the band’s cellist, Abel. The quintet has been charming and elevating audiences across the UK with its high-octane and percussive live workouts blending roots, jazz & classical music from around the globe. Its repertoire unravels new marriages of music: vocal harmonies of South Africa coalesce with everything from Celtic reels and Brazilian samba to Balkan folk music and beyond. Kabantu throws away the rulebook to bridge countries and cultures, creating an exuberant and joyful sound. Reigniting traditional songs written over the last century, everybody in Kabantu uses their voice to sing, scat and stutter alongside their instruments, which includes percussion, double bass, cello, violin, guitar and banjo.
