The title of this programme was given to the anthology of Italian madrigals edited and published by Nicholas Young in 1588. Music ‘from over the Alps’ spread throughout Europe, most notably in the Hapsburg Empire and England. The publication of this collection of Italian madrigals, with English translations, represents not only the English taste in Italian madrigals but also the wider import and export trade of music and musicians. Composers represented include both Gabrielis, Neri, Crotti, Bassano, Dowland, Bull and Morley. Journey back to the artistically vibrant world of the sixteenth century with QuintEssential in their first LDSM appearance.
