Commissioned by clarinettist Ferdinand Troyer as a companion piece to Beethoven’s Septet. Schubert was alleged to have been composing a “Grand Symphony” around the same time as his Octet. It is tantalising to wonder if the Octet was in fact a set of preliminary sketches for this work. Whatever its origin, the work has remained an enduring favourite with audiences.
