Born into a family of distinguished musicians,Raphael Wallfisch studied in London with Amaryllis Fleming, Amadeo Baldovino and Derek Simpson and with Gregor Piatigorsky in California. At the age of 24 he won the Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition in Florence. Since then he has enjoyed a worldwide career and is regularly invited to play at major festivals such as the Proms, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Spoleto, Prades, Oslo and Schleswig Holstein. His duo with John York has toured and recorded extensively for over 35 years, and the Trio Shaham Erez Wallfisch, founded in 2009, will be in residence at the Wigmore Hall for the Beethoven anniversary year. His extensive discography includes rarities he has championed, and he has worked closely with many leading British composers. He teaches masterclasses all over the world and is a professor at the RCM. Raphael's most recent appearance at LDSM was in 2010.
