2014 International Festival Archive

Friends, Music Lovers, Artists, Colleagues –  a most warm welcome to Festival 2014, Op.30!

Celebrating our 30th festival this August, we look back to our launch in 1985 and ratitude on 30 years of enrichment, enduring friendships and a wealth of community support.

As you turn the pages of 2014, our interwoven musical threads of Richard Strauss, CPE Bach, Shakespeare and the commemoration of World War 1 introduce new artists and greet the return of old friends.

With a strong upbeat, Manchester Camerata opens the festival with the brilliance of CPE Bach, Strauss’s Oboe Concerto and Mozart’s great  G minor Symphony.

World War 1 affected many composers deeply, among them Debussy, Ravel, Bliss, Vaughan Williams, Gurney and Bax. In programmes rcentenary of this world-changing tragedy we welcome the Nimrod Harp Trio, the Young Piano Quartet, and the return of the distinguished pianist Andrew Brownell. Don’t miss the poignant portrayal From your ever loving son Jack.

World Premières! Commissioned by LDSM, we look forward enormously to Ed Hughes’s setting of Shakespeare sonnets for voice, viola and piano. Mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge joined by givst performance in an innovative programme including Strauss and Granados. Yuko Inoue with composer-pianist Francis Pott premières his or her. Jonathan Scott, organist-composer, in a brilliant programme brings LDSM the second performance of his new work.

From Japan: Celebrity Morning Recital – Leading artists Kazuki Sawa and Emiko Tadenuma link the 19th century Romantics Schubert, Brahms and Strauss. Music theatre in the evening. With Tokaido Road, an evocative tale portrayed exquisitely in mime, scenery and sound, we welcome the Okeanos ensemble and composer Nicola LeFanu who combines traditional Japanese instruments with their western cousins.

LDSM Débuts! The Fine Arts and Vogler Quartets join us fst time as does renowned cellist Harro Ruijsenaars. New Collaborations! Fine Arts Quartet together with the Chilingirians are in octet formation mid-festival as part of a three-concert strand, ‘Quartets Plus’. Harro Ruijsenaars partnered by Andrew Brownell introduces Saint-Saëns’ Suite.

Stile Antico returns with two concerts and a workshop session. Masterclasses at Brathay, opera and drellinis, pre-concert talks, poetry and concerts at Blackwell, Ragtime and jazz promise a  busy festival…

All in a day: am… Beethoven and Shostakovich quartets played by the Voglers followed by Dvořák’s magical sextet with Yuko Inoue and Harro Ruijsenaars. pm… With abundantly talented Academy soloists and ensembles and Grieg’s Holberg Suite directed by Kazuki Sawa, we end on the high notes of new generation artists in our traditional Candlelight Serenade Concert.Share and enjoy with us our 30th ‘Musical Offering’.
