Overview of Music from a Foreign Land 2010/2011
Music from a Foreign Land introduces the music and musicians of different cultures through creative workshops and performances. Launched in 2004, this programme has already focussed on indigenous music from Asia, Africa, South & Central America and Easter Europe.
Our next programme is focussing on the Music of China runs through until April 2011 and is split into three projects.

Nov 2010 - April 2011
It was launched in November 2010 when Jiafeng Chen & Alexis White introduced pupils from Queen Katherine School, Kendal, Windermere School, and Lakes School (Troutbeck Bridge) to the scales and structures of traditional Chinese music.The duo also gave a public performance in the recently reopened Ambleside Parish Church.
Our next project brings Chinese ribbon dance to primary schools in Kendal. This traditional dance that originated in China around 2,000 years ago. With its gentle floating movements and brightly coloured silk ribbons, it still is a widely performed and beautiful form of traditional dance, favoured particularly during Chinese New Year celebrations. Pupils will have a chance to see a colourful demonstration of the dance, with dancer Jih-Wen Yeh dressed in stunning costumes. Jih-Wen's school workshops will culminate on Friday 11 February in a public performance by Jih-Wen, including demonstration performances by children involved in the workshops. Our final project sees us work with Manchester Chinese Arts Centre in a programme which will give secondary pupils across South Lakeland opportunities. Further details will appear here shortly.
