Arising from the same rich compositional period that produced his Second Piano Concerto, Rachmaninov's G minor sonata is similarly imbued with strong memorable melodies underpinned with rich and sonorous harmonies. With the 1st of Beethoven's Op.102 sonatas (the 2nd is performed by Gregor Horsch on Tuesday 9 August) this concert by renowned cellist Robert Cohen and pianist Benjamin Frith - in a duo collaboration which had its roots at LDSM two years ago - is not to be missed.

Robert Cohen (cello)

Following his RFH debut at the age of 12, Robert Cohen followed with a recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto which earned a silver disc, placing him at the forefront of his musical generation.  The concert hall remains Cohen's first love - world wide, and his enthusiasm for chamber music provides the bedrock of the Charleston Manor Festival, which he has directed since 1989.

Cohen's passionate views on communicating music have been widely broadcast and published. He is a Professor at the RAM and the Lugano Conservatorium.

Benjamin Frith (piano)

'Prodigy of Prodigies' was how Benjamin Frith was described by Denis Matthews when he won the Dudley National Concerto Competition aged fourteen.

After rave reviews after his American and Edinburgh Festival debuts, Frith quickly established himself as an international concert artist, giving recitals and concerto performances world-wide. Last year he was re-invited by the Warsaw Philharmonic to perform rarely heard concertos by Hummel and John Field to celebrate Chopin's bicentenary.
