In a world saturated by sound 'The Organ of Corti' is a musical instrument that recycles the sound of road traffic. By using the acoustic principles of sonic crystals to accentuate or attenuate the frequencies within the sound, it enables listeners to hear musical structures within what many would consider noise.

The 'Organ of Corti' is conceived as an invitation to the visitor to 'listen to themselves listen', mediating our experience of sound in the landscape simply by offering us a frame through which to listen to it. Rather than offering us the opportunity to hear something new, the 'Organ of Corti' offers us the opportunity to hear something already familiar in a new way.

The 'Organ of Corti' proposes a radical departure from traditional conceptions of what constitutes music by framing existing sounds in the environment and inviting listeners to navigate their own way through the maze of possible outcomes. It reminds us that the phenomenon we are hearing is of course always changing, always new, and suggests a way of reconsidering of the act of listening itself.

The Organ of Corti is the winner of the PRSF New Music Award 2010 and with support from the Arts Council England will tour to four venues over the summer of 2011.
